How We Began

How White Lane Lets Started

Back in 2009 Terry Coxon & Andy Ellis were both working in separate fields and separate parts of the country. Terry was working for Rolls Royce as an engineer in Derby and Andy in sales for SSE in their hometown of Plymouth.

Having both had experience in property renovation and residential lettings the decision was made to try something different.

"Why is it I always get my best ideas whilst shaving" - Albert Einstein.

We saw the opportunity to buy a lovely little apartment in the heart of The Barbican that required a lot of upgrading but seemed to offer huge potential.

To begin with the obvious choice was a long term tenancy but after we spent some time renovating the apartment and having spent weekends staying there we considered the idea of holiday lets. The area was so perfect, being right in the heart of everything from the harbourside to the bars and restaurants the decision was made to investigate this idea further.

Neither of us had managed a short term let before so we had to thoroughly consider everything from the correct advertising to tax and legal requirements.

The plan grew!

The plan started to come together then a close friend needed a place to stay for six months so we put the final renovation on hold and offered the apartment.

Things could have stopped there if another apartment in the same block had not come up for sale soon after and seemed a good deal.

The Pottery was our first step into Holiday Lettings proper. We again refitted the place from top to bottom with the idea of " what would we expect"

The standard was set, the apartment prepared and the adverts went live on Holiday Lettings & Tripadvisor.

In the first six months we learnt an awful lot on our feet from how we met our guests expectations to planning changeovers. The reviews started to come in and this gave us an idea that we were on the right path

A business plan started to come together along with The Studio, No 3 and another refit. We had picked up lots of tips along the way and our style, which is carried through our apartments, developed. We have always aimed for a clean and homely feel with aspects of The Barbican and local area featured.

It's such a lovely area to visit with its cobbled streets and lanes and selection of fine restaurants and bars, there is something for everyone.

Our first property was returned to us and this refit completed with its new family bedroom and new fitted kitchen which gave us The Duplex.

We were offered another apartment in the block to manage and refit and The Suite gave us an individual hotel style offering. Perfectly formed, this has proved a great hit for single travellers or couples wanting high standards and a great location.

The Business quickly grew

Two more apartments followed to complete our seven apartments in White Lane, The Loft which has had a complete refit and The Gallery with its lovely open plan lounge diner looking over New Street and towards the Elizabethan House at one end to the Tudor Rose Tearooms at the other.

This is now a full time commitment for us both now with Terry embarking on photography and the setting up of The Barbicans newest studio in Friars Lane.
